Hamstring injuries can be very debilitating.  The hamstring is actually a set of 3 muscles located on the upper back of the leg.  The hamstring muscle group is one of the strongest muscle groups of the body. The ham string muscles can be injured very easily.  We suggest a proper warm-up and stretching to prevent a hamstring pull or "hamstring injury."  The hamstring injury pain can range from just feeling a slight pull to severe hamstring pain.  Many people call this injury a torn hamstring or a pulled hamstring.  This is actually true, the actual muscle fibers do tear. The hamstring is sore, especially if many tears occur.

Some athletes are still able to play with a slight hamstring strain.  A strained hamstring really needs to be taken care of properly.  One way to do this is to use a hamstring compression brace or an ace bandage.  We really feel that the hamstring brace works much better for the care of a hamstring injury.

When an acute hamstring injury occurs, the best hamstring treatment is to ice it immediately.  We suggest having a first aid kit that includes instant ice packs and an ace bandage to be able to apply the ice ASAP.  Even better would be to have the Flex-i wrap type plastic wrap to keep the ice in place.

When the injury is at least a few days old, we suggest applying heat.  One can use Cramer Atomic Balm which is the medium ointment made by Cramer or if your daring, you can use Cramer Red Hot (be careful and follow directions).

Some people like to apply Biofreeze with ilex.  The Bio Freeze comes in many different sizes such as Biofreeze roll-on, Biofreeze tube and the Biofreeze Gallon just to name a few.

If you prefer to use the ace bandage on your hamstring injury there are many kinds of athletic tape or "sports tape" you can use to secure it.  There is regular grade athletic tape, Johnson and Johnson Coach Athletic Tape, Johnson and Johnson Zonas Athletic Tape, Andover Powerflex tape, Colored Athletic Tape by Mueller, and of course Pre wrap under the tape.  We suggest to use Cramer Tuff Skin (also known as Cramer Tough Skin) as an adherent under the prewrap or tape.

A few other sports medicine suggestions:

  • If you need to get a cast, use xerosox as a cast cover for the shower or entering water.
  • If you have an ankle injury use an ankle brace while doing rehab with Theraband.
  • If you need to use a knee brace, make sure you purchase the correct kind for your injury and make sure it fits correctly.
  • The achilles tendon needs to be stretched properly to prevent an achilles tendon injury. There are great achilles tendon support braces on the market. We suggest you use it if need be. The achilles injury can be a very long and painful rehab process.
  •
  • The IT Band (Iliotibial band) know has its own It Band compression wrap to help with the pain with running.
  • Shin Splints Braces or supports are also a great way to help to deal with pain while running. The shin splint is very common injury.
